Today's retail discoveries

1) Habitat Restore. They have toilet tank lids for $10 in all sizes. It's a great store with friendly staff. The other customers are friendly, too. You could redo your whole kitchen, retile your bathroom...anything. It's all there, folks. No need for Home Depot.

2) I do not usually succumb to sales jobs... But I did to this one. If you walk in the Rideau Centre - main doors off Rideau street, pass the little store on the right, go up a couple of steps, pass the bank machines, you will arrive at some little stalls. A cute Israeli guy will ask for your hand. You give it to him. He puts some hand cream on it. You thank him. He then says: "You are natural woman. I see you keep your nails natural. I want to show you something." Then, he has me. He proceeds to file my nails with a kind of file block. After a few seconds of this filing process, it looks like I'm wearing a clear translucent polish. Think of all the money saved on manicures. Amazing! He tells me it will look beautiful like this for 2 weeks. And, the file block lasts for 2 years! Or, I can get my money back. He gave me a special special price and told me not to tell you. So, I won't.

Oh yeah. I got the same exotic, beautiful Israeli people last year in a shopping mall in Pennsylvania. Yes- shiny nails. Yes- return if you don't like. Yes- special price for me too. Only thing is, it's now almost a year later, I've used it maybe 5 times, and I think it looks like it's biting the dust.
It must be the lighting that makes our nails look extra shiny in the malls... cause you can buy the nail blocks at Shoppers' for a lot less!
Ah well....

Oh Donna, this breaks my heart. I somehow thought this shiny nail thing would be life-transforming!

Ha ha –The Israeli manicure guy at Rideau. What a spiel. Did you hold out for the really, extra special price that he’s giving only to you and on which he’s not even going to make any money and is in fact, losing money? Thing is, like Donna said, you can go to Shoppers and get an all-in-one nail buffer for $3 that does exactly the same thing. Except you don’t get the swarthy sales guy stroking your hand and whispering absurd compliments in your ear.

Donna, XUP: My eyes are closed; my hands are over my ears; I'm saying blah, blah, blah, blah.

That guy fleeced my mom into not only buying one for herself, but for me and my sisters too. I find that the shininess-effect wears off very quickly, but I do still use it to give my nails a good buffing before applying polish.

And you know what? If you got some extra personal satisfaction or the slightest ego boost from the israeli dude, it's worth the extra few bucks you would have saved by buying it from Shoppers. That's how I see it.
