I never learned how to cook from mother (which I guess is how a lot of people my age learn). My mother was good at many things, but she has never been a real force dans la cuisine. So, I have mostly learned about cooking from my exes. Thank you, exes! Here are some things I've learned:
1) When in doubt, start by chopping an onion and cooking it in olive oil. Always a good start. If you put the onion in the fridge, it won't make you cry when you chop it.
2) Cut things away from yourself. Use chopping blocks. Don't cut things in the air....
3) Add nuts to things: stirfrys, chili, salads, you name it.
4) You don't need to add more salt if you are using something like soy sauce; it's salty enough!
5) Don't be intimidated by large cuts of meats, or a big fish. They are the easiest things to cook.
6) Experiment with different grains. There is a whole world out there beyond potatoes and Minute rice.
7) Invest in a state-of-the-art vegetable peeler. It will make your life better.
8) Eat lots of fruits and vegetables; they are really good for you! Really focus on the fruits in the morning. You will feel better.
9) Make a lot of food, so that you will have leftovers. You can bring your leftovers to work and save money.
10) It's O.K. to eat in front of the T.V. if hockey playoffs are on.

I can't believe there was a 10th thing!
You may thank your exes, but some of us learned in home ec. I date myself. Still, say what you want, but I did learn to cook, and cook well. I don't recall learning much else in grades 7-9, so at least there was that.
Harmony I think you should write a posting called "What I learned in Home Ec". I learned how to make macaroni and cheese in Home Ec. Clearly, you had a better program...
Hey. How 'bout them Habs...?
No, no, no coyote. Cute ears or not, you can't change the subject. I did have a good Home Ec experience Aggie. Not only did I learn to cook, but I learned to sew too. An entire post about it might be a BIT much, though.
SO, coyote, how about filling us in on what you learned in Shop?
Come on, Harmony. Post!!! You know you want to...
I learned how to sew in 4H. They tricked me - I thought I was going to raise a calf.
I thought of your exes last night while I was cutting something, and then I changed the way I held the knife so I was cutting away from myself.
I should write a post about things I learned from Aggie's exes.
